Last week The Daily show aired a hilarious summary (see the above video) of a scandal involving Rep. Jane Harman (D.- California) in the segment "Your Government Not at Work." The simplified version goes like this: Harman, a supporter of the recent semi-legal wiretapping, was caught by that very same wire-tapping program as she told Israeli lobbyists that she would pressure the Justice Department to lessen the espionage charges faced by a number of Israelis if the lobbyists would in turn pressure Nancy Pelosi to appoint Harman to better committees.

Though Harman denies that she actually lobbied for this result, it looks as if Harman's end of the bargain has been completed: charges have been dropped against the Israelis who may or may not have been acting a bit too liberally with state secrets. While it's clear that Harman does not have the pull to achieve this result (somehow I doubt any Representative could kill a Justice Department investigation single-handed), it is nonetheless a very entertaining addition to "Your Government Not at Work."

Socialists are running the country!

Representative Spencer Bachus (R- Alabama) is saving America. Bachus has been working on a secret(!) list of the socialists in the House of Representatives, and he has come up with 17 names! Hmmm...somehow this seems so familiar. Ah, yes, this is the second coming of the (crazy) right-winger Sen. Joseph McCarthy and the (in)famous House Committee on Un-American Activities (HCUA)! [note: McCarthy was in the Senate and thus was not involved with the HCUA.] Let's hope Bachus is a little less successful than McCarthy and the HCUA.

Go Away Charlie Rangel

We already knew that he sucks (tax evasion as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee is tough to explain) and now he's reintroducing legislation to reintroduce the draft. It'll never pass, but he still sucks.

Notes on Congress

CQ politics has a really cool tool that for each Congressman shows the proportion of the time they (1) voted with the president, (2) voted with their party, (3) voted at all.

No senator voted with the president less often than Ted Kennedy. Interestingly, no senator voted with the president more often than John McCain. The two senators from Maine, both Republicans, were the least loyal senators to their party.

Of those not campaigning (or cancerous), Senate artifacts Robert Byrd and Daniel Inouye (71 combined years in the Senate) missed the most votes.

********************************

In other news, it's already been a big deal that Vietnamese Republican Anh "Joseph" Cao brought down uber-corrupt William Jefferson (try as you want, you can't add "Clinton", nor can you make a "movin' on down" joke) in Louisiana. Well, as if that wasn't enough, when a reporter asked, Cao (Anh?) said he would be interested in being a member of the Congressional Black Caucus (One Two Three). Just for reference, though others have tried, there has never been a non-black member of the CBC. There have been two black Republicans in congressional history, one was a member of the caucus (and generated frequent controversy) and the other declined to join.

And if that's still not enough for you, just enjoy what my current Congressman is bringing to race relations.

Liberal Media? Perhaps so ...

It makes sense right?  The media should totally follow the story of a guy if he's in Congress, making laws on behalf of his constituents, and ends up clearly guilty of accepting bribes, yet nonetheless manages to stay extremely close in his reelection bid, only to finally be declared the loser of the razor-thin election roughly a month after the fact?  It's totally fair that the media follows that story, right?

Well, the media has not been doing it's job in following around Bill "Cold Hard Cash" Jefferson.  Jefferson, or BCHCJ as I call him for short (not really), was finally defeated in his re-election bid in Louisiana's 2nd district.  To speak to the relevance of his defeat, the Democrat was defeated in this heavily black district by none other than Vietnamese Republican (don't laugh) Anh "Joseph" Cao.

I know the bribery aspects of his story are older, but I have no idea why this guy got almost no coverage when Ted Stevens was all over the news.  I guess Senators have roughly 4.35 times as much power as Representatives (though Stevens got more than 4.35 times as much coverage) and I suppose the whole 60-seat thing really drove the narrative on the Senate election this year.  Either way, even very involved people I know don't know about BCHCJ, so I think the story was underreported.  Either way, he lost, so hurrah to that!

Post-Election Analysis: House Edition

So how did things go in the House? As of right now we have 255 Dems and 174 Republicans with 6 races undecided. I predicted (split the tossups) 258-177, so right now I'm not looking too bad.

Now, I didn't really stake much on the House races because there just wasn't much information available. I did the best I could to put predictions together based on information from Wikipedia, polls, CQ politics, etc. Interestingly, of the races still undecided, all of them were classified as "Safe" or "Strong" as opposed to "Weak" or "Tossup".

I probably could have put together a better graph, but here we can see that I predicted 253 seats to go to Dems. 245 went to Dems, 4 to Reps, and 4 undecideds. I predicted 172 seats to Republicans. 166 went to Reps, 4 went to Dems, and 2 undecideds. Dems won 6 of the 10 tossups.

There are six remaining races. Ethan Berkowitz will gain on Don Young in AK, but unlike the senate race, the Republican here may have too large of a lead to overcome. Bill "Cold Hard Cash" Jefferson is in a tossup in LA-02. LA-04 is also a tossup. CA-04 features a race that was tight all year, while OH-15 and VA-05 are tossups where every single poll was lead by the same candidate, a Democrat and Republican respectively.

Election Projection, House Version

Doing the House races sucks because there is so little data. Many races rated by some sites as tossups didn't even have a single poll, and a very large number only had polls commissioned by one of the candidates, so there was very poor data to go on.

Nonetheless, here are my best projections (the second one is the number of state delegations controlled by each party - more relevant when an electoral tie was feasible)

And I'm sorry for the most ungodly long table ever, but here you go. A few races worth watching are AK-AL, where Don Young might be kicked out of the House for the first time since 1973 for, believe it or not, being corrupt. Also, MN-06 is Michele Bachmann's district; she's been mentioned here before. Florida has many hotly contested races. PA-12 is the district where Paul Murtha called his western Pennsylvania constituents racists - his 34 year career may come to an end. WY-AL is also a very close race.

Darcy Burner for Congress, indeed

Darcy Burner (D) is trying to unseat two-term Congressman Dave Reichert in what is possibly the closest House race of the year. So there I am on TerraPass's website looking into getting my office to buy carbon offsets, and right there on their list of partners is "Darcy Burner for Congress," which has apparently offset 19 metric tons of carbon. Good job, Darcy!

Breaking News: MN-06

(If nothing special happens, then the title of this post is a link to the story in question)

McCarthy-wannabe Michele Bachmann just got the smackdown from the GOP. Even though she is ahead in a non-safe race, they've pulled all their ad money from her. I doubt they want her to lose so much as want to distance themselves from her, but even then. Wow. Never heard of this before.

The New House Race of Interest (Updated)

"What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out if they are pro-America or anti-American."

--Michele Bachmann (R-MN-06)

Freshman Congresswomen Michele Bachmann has turned on the overdrive (unfortunately, not my line) and gotten herself into trouble for calling for McCarthy-esque investigations into the patriotism of members of Congress. I'll now be watching her election race very closely. Here's a polling summary up to today, but look for plenty of polls in the near future now:

Public Opinion Strategies (R) - 10/13 - Tinklenberg 33, Bachmann 44
Grove Insight (D) - 10/11 - Tinklenberg 38, Bachmann 42
Grove Insight (D) - 08/20 - Tinklenberg 27, Bachmann 40

Unfortunately all three polls so far are partisan, so it's hard to tell what's going on, although even the Dem polls show Bachmann ahead. My average gives Bachmann a 9-pt lead.

Update:
"When Sarah Palin, herself no stranger to the most vile kind of mudslinging, says that your attacks are beyond the pale, I think you've officially crossed the line by any objective standard."
--Swing State Project

October 15, 2008

Wow, Massachusetts.

I couldn't help but comment - there is generally a pretty loose correlation between a state's red/blue identity for presidential elections, and how it votes when it comes to Senators/Representatives/State Offices. But each of Massachusetts' 10 districts are rated "Safe Democrat," with only two representatives who have served fewer than 10 years in Congress. Even in the most partisan of states, a clean sweep like this is never seen.
