Netflix gets more awesome

OK, so I know that the Xbox 360 is not likely to be common hardware among our crowd, but I figured I'd share this nonetheless. When I got on mine the other day (I'm not a big video game player, but I got it on the cheap) I noticed that Xbox Live was doing a cross-promotion thing with Netflix.

So basically the way it works is the movies available for "Instant Watch" I can now watch on the Xbox. I'm excited about this because while instant watch is available for your computer, connecting mine to the TV is kind of a pain, and so I don't really make much of use of it.

The downside: not that many titles are available yet and I did have to buy an Xbox Gold membership ($50 a year allows you to play online - a ripoff, sure, but hey, now I can play Netflix movies and I can play sports games with my friends). And one other thing, which is kind of stupid but mostly hilarious: Mark informs me that Sony Pictures titles are not available for viewing through the Xbox.

  1. That is pretty sweet. Two questions: 1. How much does it cost to get an Xbox 360 on the cheap?; and 2. What games would you say are worth checking out?

  2. Ok, so I found mine on Craigslist for $220. It is the kind with a hard drive (this is important), and included all cables, two controllers, one charge pack for controller, a headset/mic, two games (Halo 3 and Kameo, neither of which i've played much), and the last two months of his xbox live account (which I didn't use).

Again, I'm not a huge gamer, but one thing is that any game that is available on the Wii or the Xbox I know I can get for the Xbox and get a better game. When Mark got NHL09 he gave me his copy of NHL08. I haven't gotten into a hockey video game since NHL02, but really since '99, and this game was everything I'd always been wishing for. I know hockey isn't very general interest though. I am looking to get Madden 08 for Christmas (getting current-year sports games makes no sense to me) so I'll see how that goes.

I've probably put in an hour on Halo 3. If you can get into it, it seems as though it would be pretty good. Really, that's about it.

My brother can't stop raving about Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty 4. He fits the model of a typical Xbox player a little better than I do but I saw him play the first Gears of War and it was pretty impressive.

But don't take my word for it - here's some expert opinions (I guess) One. Two. Three. And hey, on "One" it looks like my love for the new NHL game isn't just me. (I played '08 with Mark yesterday, and every single thing I disliked about it - not that there were many - is fixed in '09. A new feature I like in '08 is that the second controller stick acts as your stick, so you have complete control over the puck).

So, that got unorganized and rambly, but there you go.
