King of Kong

Saw this movie again last night. Didn't like it the first time - not sure why. It was great the second time. I think maybe some of you saw it. It's a documentary about the Donkey Kong high score record and I thought it was a scripted mockumentary for a while, but it's all true. Anyway, aside from that I saw that one of the guys in the film broke 16 arcade video game records in one day in 2007. That is just amazing.

  1. It is awesome that Brian Kuh pulled that off, but he was a jerk in that movie, if I remember correctly. Was he not the guy who was standing way too close to the challenger while relaying information the the then champion? At least to me he came off as a true suck-up; not even smart enough to be a patsy. In particular I am thinking of the scene when he presents that ridiculous videotaped game from the then champion.

  2. Yeah, Kuh was probably Mitchell's most ardent disciple.

Watching it this time, and since I recently read a lot about Jonestown and saw a dramatization of it on Discovery or something, I couldn't help but think the whole time about Billy Mitchell as a cult leader. He was so unabashedly arrogant, and everyone around was willing to defend him at every turn (until the end, anyway).

  3. I agree about Mitchell; he seemed to have difficulty considering that he may not be the best. If you are interested in the story of Jonestown I suggest you check out Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple. The documentary seeks to explain how so many were swallowed by this insane machine of a cult, showing Jones' true craziness through interviews with Jones' supporters(/survivors). One scene that stuck in my head is one in which a male supporter was alone in a room with Jones and Jones leans over to say, "You know, if you want me to fuck you in the ass, that's cool. We can do that." Very much a feeling of rubbernecking as you watch the climax unfold.
