Discussion Topic: Drilling

What about this article do the American people NOT understand??

I find it clearly explores and highlights some of the issues that continuously baffle me, such as
-Palin and her lies
-oil dependence (foreign or otherwise): independence from foreign nations, still on oil rather than alternative energy solutions
-the ineffectiveness of drilling: not a long-term solution, not even a short-term fix

  1. I think this is a great microcosm for why this election isn't the blowout it should be, and it's the same problem we had in 2004. Democrats are still trying to use policies when soundbites will do. And "drill, baby, drill," while rather crude (all puns intended) and vulgar makes for an excellent soundbite.

That said, I oppose more drilling on the grounds of global warming. However, this doesn't seem to be the reason that most policymakers are opposed to it, so I'm not sure I understand what's going on there. Not to steal a Republican line, but if it weren't for global warming, I would definitely be happy with drilling as an "all of the above approach," though recognizing that its impact will be minimal. Minimal, though, is still better than nothing.

Again, however, I think that climate change is the trump card on the issue, so I don't want to sound like I'm for drilling.
