Hanna vs. Hash

"Hanna was expected to blow ashore early Saturday morning between Myrtle Beach and Wilmington, N.C., then race up the Atlantic Coast, reaching New England by Sunday morning. Tropical storm watches or warnings ran from Georgia to Massachusetts, and included all of Chesapeake Bay, the Washington, D.C., area and Long Island.

"Ms. Hash arrived in Myrtle Beach on Thursday, ready to celebrate her 50th birthday with college friends from Colgate University at the Raiders football game against Coastal Carolina."

I don't know which part it is, exactly, that makes me want to turn away: that a foolish Ms. Hash flocks toward a storm; that she is celebrating her 50th birthday at a college football game in which no relative is participating; that she is 50 and reuniting with college friends for a momentous occasion; or just that the picture I formed of her "ready to celebrate her 50th birthday" is one of a beer scented woman without any family and a dead-end job, just the latest of a string that started not long after commencement. Get her, Hanna!

  1. Well, and this raises questions as to what the role of the government should be in terms of hurricanes. I never really thought about it until I saw Colbert interview Ron Paul, but to an extent, what is the government's business doing anything in these areas? There are very few people who truly can't afford insurance for this sort of thing I would guess, and I would support doing something for the rest of them. But flying without insurance is a risk, and just like mortgage lenders shouldn't get a bailout when their risks don't pay off, the same can be said for those who don't buy insurance against this sort of thing. And honestly, why would you even live in hurricane-prone territory anymore? (PS - Hurricane Ike headed in general direction of New Orleans, projected to be a Cat 3 at landfall ...)
