So, have I been watching too much right-wing TV, or do I have my story straight when I say that the Taliban's efforts to capture Pakistan (read: a country with a nuclear arsenal) have resulted in them so far capturing a city as close as 70 miles to its capital?
(Here's a really boring article)

That is correct, though as Obama headed into discussions earlier this week with Hamid Karzai and Asif Ali Zardari the Pakistani government was claiming a significant military victory that pushed the Taliban back another 30 miles. Zardari claims the Taliban over-reached and did not actually control the region in a meaningful way.
ReplyDeleteThis all comes after Zardari was forced into allowing Sharia law to reign in the Swat Valley of the North-West Frontier Province (which borders Afghanistan).
Robert Gates likes how Pakistan responded to the Taliban surge.
The BBC just posted an awesome map of the North-West Frontier Province that shows areas under Taliban control and areas that have a Taliban presence. I have not yet checked out the methodology, but since it is the BBC I am inclined to trust their mapping abilities.
